How to use
1. Prepare the Puttu Mixture
- Follow the same steps as before:
- Mix roasted rice flour, grated coconut, warm water, and a pinch of salt.
- The mixture should be crumbly but moist enough to hold shape when pressed.
2. Prepare the Pressure Cooker or Pot
- Add about 1-2 cups of water to the pressure cooker or pot (ensure the water doesn’t touch the pipe when attached).
- Heat the water until it starts to steam.
- If using a pressure cooker:
- Remove the whistle/weight from the lid to allow steam to escape.
3. Assemble the Puttu Pipe
- Insert the perforated disc into the bottom of the pipe.
- Add a layer of grated coconut at the bottom.
- Add a layer of rice flour mixture (3-4 inches).
- Alternate layers of coconut and flour, ending with coconut on top.
- Do not pack the mixture tightly.
4. Attach the Puttu Pipe
- Place the puttu pipe over the steam vent of the pressure cooker or the pot’s opening.
- Ensure it fits snugly to prevent steam from escaping.
5. Steam the Puttu
- Cover the top of the pipe with its lid.
- Let the puttu steam for about 7-10 minutes, or until steam escapes from the top.
6. Remove and Serve
- Carefully detach the pipe (it will be hot!).
- Use a long spoon or skewer to gently push the puttu out from the bottom.
- Serve hot with accompaniments like bananas, sugar, or curries.
